Who We Are

Cordova Bay United Church is a faith community of about 185 families and individuals within External link opens in new tab or windowThe United Church of Canada.

We believe each person is a unique, loved creation of God.

We are a church seeking to be mission-shaped: building a church and building God’s mission of love by actively caring for our community and the world. We believe everyone has something to contribute to God’s mission.

We practise radical hospitality, inspiring worship, intentional faith development, risk-taking service and extravagant generosity.

We believe we are called together by Jesus Christ as a community of hopeful believers, loving what he loved, living what he taught, striving to be faithful in our time and place.

What We Believe

We believe that Jesus is a revelation of God, that Jesus shows us what can be seen of God in a human life.

A Song of Faith

Note: A Song of Faith seeks to provide a verbal picture of what the United Church understands its faith to be in our early 21st-century context.

God is Holy Mystery,
beyond complete knowledge,
above perfect description.

Yet,
in love,
the one eternal God seeks relationship.

So God creates the universe
and with it the possibility of being and relating.
God tends the universe,
mending the broken and reconciling the estranged.
God enlivens the universe,
guiding all things toward harmony with their Source.

A New Creed

Note: A New Creed is a brief and well-loved affirmation of faith used widely in our worship.

We are not alone,
    we live in God’s world.

 We believe in God:
who has created and is creating,
    who has come in Jesus,
       the Word made flesh,
       to reconcile and make new,
who works in us and others
       by the Spirit.

We trust in God.

We are called to be the Church:
    to celebrate God’s presence,
to live with respect in Creation,
    to love and serve others,
to seek justice and resist evil,
to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen,
       our judge and our hope.

In life, in death, in life beyond death,
    God is with us.
We are not alone.

    Thanks be to God.

Our History

Cordova Bay United Church began worshipping in 1952 in what is now The Beach House Restaurant on Cordova Bay Road (formerly McMorran’s). The first church was built a year later, also on Cordova Bay Road.  In the late 1980s, we built a new church up the hill above Cordova Bay at 813 Claremont Ave. The cornerstone for the new church was laid on Dec. 6, 1987. We are still here, right next to Claremont Secondary School. Come and visit us.
