FAQs

Can anyone come to your church?

Absolutely! We welcome everyone – and we mean EVERYONE. In fact, we pride ourselves on being as open and welcoming as Jesus was, regardless of age, culture, gender, orientation, or physical ability.

Haven’t ever been to church? It doesn’t matter. Haven’t been in a long, long time? It doesn’t matter.

We take ‘radical welcoming’ to a new level.

What time are your worship services?

The regular Sunday worship service is at 10am. Services usually last about an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes.

Where do I park?

Designated, convenient parking is typically available in the church lot, with on-street parking as an alternative.

What can I expect at worship?

Sunday worship is a time when we come together as a community to seek, praise and celebrate God in our world and in our lives. There will be joyful singing and music, stories of our faith, silent and spoken prayers, and thoughtful – and thought-provoking – reflections.

What should I wear?

Wear whatever makes you comfortable. You will see a range of styles from casual (jeans, shorts) to more formal (suits, dresses).

Are children welcome?

We welcome ALL children and youth anywhere in our church. We even provide them with their own ‘Prayer Ground’ – an area where they can sit together during the regular Sunday service.

We also offer programs for children and youth on Sunday during the service.

Mothers are welcome to feed and nurse their infants anywhere in the church and at any time.

Do I have to give money?

Cordova Bay United Church is supported by the generosity of its members and friends. Giving supports our mission and ministry, the care of the building, and so on.

Having said that, offerings are not a requirement. Give what you can, when you can, if you can.

Do I have to be a member to take communion?

No. The United Church welcomes all who seek to love Jesus to share in communion.

Communion is celebrated at a table like the dining table in our homes. At the communion table, we acknowledge that Jesus Christ is the host and all are guests. The meal uses the symbols of small pieces of bread and a taste of wine or juice to remind us of Jesus’ last supper with his followers and of God’s enduring love.

Will I be singled out or pressured to get involved?

At Cordova Bay United you’ll never be put on the spot and never embarrassed. Our promise to you is that the first face you see when you approach the church will have a smile on it.

Do you take the Bible literally?

No. We often refer to scripture as “the Word of God.” By this we mean that the writer was inspired by God, and that, through the reading of scripture, God speaks to us in our time and place.

The Bible is central to our faith. As a source of wisdom, personal prayer, and devotion, we believe that reading and studying the Bible can bring us closer to God. It remains one of our best ways of experiencing God's continuing work of creation and liberation in the world, while offering us forgiveness, healing, and new life in Jesus.
